tribe first saw a plane in January, now drug-traffickers did their damage

Brazil’s National Indian Foundation is in panic mode after one of the uncontacted tribes of Amazon Indians they work at protecting has disappeared. The organization suspects it’s because drug traffickers raided their village.

The tribe was recorded for the first time in January and it looks as if their village was ransacked. Also found on site was a trafficker’s sack with a broken arrow inside and a package containing 20kg of cocaine.

According to Carlos Travassos, the head of the Brazilian government’s isolated Indian’s department, these are important findings.

“Arrows are like the identity card of uncontacted Indians. We think the Peruvians made the Indians flee. Now we have good proof.

He also expresses his extreme concern:

“We are more worried than ever. This situation could be one of the biggest blows we have ever seen in the protection of uncontacted Indians in recent decades. It’s a catastrophe.”

The biggest fear is not that the villagers have moved but that they have been wiped out and it might not be the first time.

Stephen Corry, director of Survival International, says:

“This is extremely distressing news. There is no knowing how many tribal peoples the drugs trade has wiped out in the past, but all possible measures should be taken to stop it happening again.”

Is it Darwin’s theory in example – the strongest survive… or the ones with the biggest guns? [Newslite]
