Style Guide

Style GuideWhy a style guide? A few simple conventions can help us to maintain a consistent look and feel to the site. Articles that look good and are well written are more likely to attract readers. Articles that are well written and follow the conventions closely are more likely to be promoted to the headline position or even to the main site. Our conventions are not strictly enforced, they are simply suggestions that we encourage you to apply to your writing.

Images
If you are familiar with WordPress, then you might have noticed that there is no image upload button. The feature has been disabled to keep the moderation and editing of the site as simple as possible. Once your article has been published it will go into the moderation queue, while it is there, the editor will choose a suitable image for the article. Please do not hotlink to images.

Title
The title that you choose is up to you, however, we do like the capitalization to be consistent. Please capitalize the first letter of each word with the exception of the words on the exceptions list.Exceptions: and, of, at, on, in, to, by, if.

Text
Please keep to the default font and font size unless there is a very good reason to do otherwise.

For longer articles, please make use of the “More” tag. You can find the button above the entry window. Click the “More” button after you have entered the first paragraph. This will make sure that the post does not take up too much of the page. If you are not sure, the editor will insert the tag if he or she feels it is necessary. As a general rule, anything longer than two paragraphs should have a “More” tag after the first paragraph.

Sub headings are useful for breaking up the text. For really long articles, you can make use of the heading tags in HTML mode. The preferred tag for sub headings is “h2”. Bold typeface, as has been employed in this style guide, is also useful for sub headings.

Please note that your text may be edited to improve the appearance, quality or grammatical accuracy.

Quotes
We love quotes. For short quotes, simply place the quoted text within quoatation marks, make sure that the quote is appropriately attributed. For long or particular impactful quotes, you can make use of the “Blockquote” tag. When using “Blockquote” you should still place the quoted text in quotation marks then attribute the quote, and give a very brief description of the person who made it; as in the example below.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” – Albert Einstein, Physicist.

Note: I prefer to place blockquotes at the top of the text.

Links
Links can be placed anywhere in the text, we ask only that people exercise caution with regards to the sites that they link to. Regarding the source of the article, we ask that you surround any source links in one pair of square brackets. The primary source, that is the source with the original content, should come first; followed by “via” and any secondary links. Please see the examples below – note that there are no active links below, links should be active:

When there is one primary source: [Metro]
When there are two primary sources but no secondary sources (rare): [Metro, Sky]
When there is a primary and a secondary source (common): [Metro via Uberreview]
When there is a primary source and two secondary sources: [Metro via Uberreview, Digg]

Conventions
These conventions not strictly enforced, however, we try to follow them in our own writing and would be greatly appreciative of anyone making an effort to do so in their own.
Numbers – Numbers one to ten should be written, arabic numerals are suitable for 11 and above. Numbers should be spelled when they begin a sentence.
Acronyms – Acronyms should be defined at first appearance and can be used thereafter. Acronyms should be spelled when they begin a sentence.
Words in foreign languages – The language of this site is English. Words that are written in languages other than English should be italicized.
