An eighteen-year-old thief caught shoplifting in a Virginia, USA, costume store was lucky he found a victim that was more concerned about the criminals life choices than the criminal himself.
Instead of calling the Police, likely giving the teenager a criminal record and making his future bleak, he gave the would-be-bandit a second chance. He made him dress up as a “Sesame Street” character for punishment.
Costume store owner Andrew Perry made the teen dress as Bert – from Bert and Ernie – and carry a sign saying he was a shoplifter, the US ABC News reported.
Mr Perry said he did not want to press charges, instead opting for the shoplifter spending six hours over two days in costume with the sign in front of the store.
Did it work? According to the teenager concerned, he said the punishment was an effective lesson.
He should probably be thankful Mr Perry was not retailing womens clothing. The result may not have been as encouraging.
