Amsterdam, Holland: Hundreds of thousands of Dutch people have laced up their skates and taken to the frozen canals for the first time in twelve years. Canal skating used to be a common occurrence, however, as a result of pollution and global warming, it has become a rare phenomenon.

Emergency wards were subsequently filled with injured skaters, including defense minister Eimert Van Middelkoop who fell on a rough patch of ice and broke his wrist. [IHT]
