An elephant in the northern Keonjhar district in the Orissa state of India is exhibiting some rather unique behavior. According to people from the area, the so called “Bandit Elephant” will not let motorists pass unless they give him food. The elephant allegedly forces motorists to roll down their windows and then searches the inside of vehicles for food, which he gulps down. Once fed, he lets his victims go.
When motorists do not wind down their windows, the elephant pushes the car and stands directly in front of its path, not allowing it to pass until the driver complies. Forestry officials claim that the elephant is likely old and in search of easy food. They also warn motorists to take care not to tease the animal, as it could become aggressive if provoked.
