Woman Tries to Use Gold Double Eagle Coins to Pay Walmart Bill

Submitted by C. S. Magor on Tuesday, 31 March 2009One Comment | Google Buzz |

goldA woman exchanged 14 gold double eagle coins in the Zions Bank in St. George, Utah in order to pay for her Walmart shopping bill. She explained to the staff that she had groceries waiting and she promptly received the face value of the $20 coins, $280. The bank is looking for the woman because the coins are worth much more than their face value, by weight of gold alone they would have been worth approximately $900.

The rarity of the coins, which were minted between 1875 and 1927, has seen them change hands for anywhere between a few thousand dollars and one million dollars (depending on the year and the quality). [Desert News via Luxist]
