From the “There’s Got to be an Easier Way” files, a 28 year old Indian woman attempted to get her name in the Guiness Book of World Records by eating 51 “ghost chilies” in 2 minutes. The chilies are considered the spiciest in the world, containing more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the scientific measurement of a chili’s spiciness.
As a point of reference, classic jalapeno peppers range from 2500 to 8000 Scoville units.
Anandita Dutta Tamuly of Gauhati, India was cheered on by a famous visitor–Gordon Ramsey, who tried a bite of a chili, an immediately regrettable decision. Tamuly previously had eaten 60 chilies in a 2 minute period in 2006, but that attempt had gone unrecorded. This time she’s sure she’ll make it into the Guinness record book…if not for eating all those fire-hot chilies, at least for having the world’s worst recorded “ring of fire”. [via Yahoo ]
