Inmates in the Danilio Pinheiro prison have found a novel way to smuggle cell phones into their work farm, carrier pigeons. Guards at the prison were alerted to the fact when they found a pigeon resting on an electric wire with a cloth bag tied to one of its legs; a closer inspection revealed cellular phone components. The next day, proving that it was not a coincidence, they found a charger.
Speaking of the prisoners, police investigator Celso Soramiglio stated:
Some of them are members of organized crime groups that use cell phones to talk to family and friends and to give and receive orders for criminal actions outside and inside prisons
In the past, leaders of the First Capital Command gang, who are largely based in prison, have used cell phones to plan and order crimes ranging from drug dealing to bank robbery. [MSNBC]
