Eight people faced a South African court, the crime, stealing a giraffe from a game reserve. Officials quickly realized that the animal had been stolen for food as when they caught up with the men the animal had already been slaughtered and they were preparing to eat.
All of the men were from northern province of Limpopo, where several game reserves are located, including the famous Kruger National Park.
The meat of giraffes, which often grow up to five meters in height and weigh up to 1200kg, sometimes finds its way into gourmet shops around the world. Giraffes are not endangered, but their meat, which is kosher, tends to be prohibitively expensive. [News]
