Former Marine Staves Off Mountain Lion With Chainsaw

Dustin Britton, 33-year-old former Marine, was forced to defend himself with his chainsaw when he was attacked by a starving mountain lion.

Britton said that he was cutting wood when he noticed the mountain lion watching him from behind some bushes. He stated that he then backed away, revving his chainsaw, at which point the mountain lion charged.

After being batted three or four times with the mountain lion’s front paws, Britton managed to land a blow with the chainsaw, at which point it ran away.

Wildlife agents at the Shoeshine National Forest who later shot the animal after it attacked one of the dogs that had been brought into track it, informed Britton that he had inflicted a 6 to 8-inch gash in the animal’s shoulder.

In Britton’s words:

You would think if you hit an animal with a chain saw it would dig right in. I might as well have hit it with a hockey stick.

The mountain lion tested negative for rabies.
