Two men are dead and two more are in hospital after a violent robbery attempt was thwarted by shotgun blasts from a 72-year-old restaurant supply store owner.
When four armed men entered the store, announced the robbery and pistol-whipped an employee, Charles Augusto Jr. responded by firing three shots from a 12 gauge shotgun that he had purchased following a robbery some 30 years ago. From a range of 20 feet, his three shots hit all four bandits, killing two.
Of the dead, one expired at the front door, the other collapsed across the street and was pronounced dead in hospital. The two survivors were quickly apprehended by police who followed their blood trails and taken to hospital for treatment. Police have said that they are treating Augusto as a victim of a crime and have not indicated any intention to charge him over the shooting.
