Zhou was travelling with his wife by ferry on the Yangtze River when he decided to take the drastic action.
When Zhou ran from his cabin covering his ears and shouted, “I can’t stand it any longer,” a crew member who witnessed the event thought that he was suffering from an ear infection. When they went to help him, however, they realized that he was not suffering from any physical injuries.
Then Zhou’s wife burst onto the scene and the man’s consternation became apparent; she started nagging him again.
According to the same crew member:
The husband covered his ears again and said: ‘I need a break’ before jumping over the side into the rushing river.
We immediately found lamps to light up the water but found nobody. The possibility of survival can be zero.
Later that night he was found by police, having managed to swim 2km to reach the riverbank.
Zhou was reported as saying:
I felt I was dying, but even that’s better than my wife’s nagging.
After meeting Zhou the following morning at the police station, his wife promised to go easier on him.
