This fountain, which pumps metallic mercury instead of water was built by Alexander Calder for the 1937 World’s Fair.
Due to the dangers of contact with mercury is now fully enclosed in a glass box at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.

just a few years ago i found out how dangerous mercury is….. when i was little i would break all the thermometers i could get my hands on and have large amounts of mercury to play with. i loved it.

Mercury, is not as dangerous as everyone likes to put it: Im 35, my dad is 91, and we both handled mercury many times. When he was a kid, mercury was included mandatory with every chemistry set (what ever happened to those?). I had lots of fun with my chem set-i learned a lot!! Kids today, and some adults don’t know anything and want to “nanny” us up until there is no one left who has ever done anything!!!!! I served on submarines in the navy, and worked as a miner-thats right: all your precious cars, and metal objects had to start somewhere!!!!!! Did someone think that metal just is made? I know, we make it from oil, sad thing is that some people think that we do make all our lives from oil or that we just “synthesize” it. My point is that i have been exposed to far more mercury than any of the regualar public and i don’t feel sick, i get regualar checkups and mri’s (mine accident) and if i was “sick” with mercury poisoning-i’d know. Ya’ll need to stop worryin so much-if your gonna die, then your gonna die-thats it. I saw a lotta men die!!!!!!!!!!!
