Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the Iraqi journalist who burst onto the world stage when he threw his shoes at former President George W. Bush, will be released from prison next month after a significant sentence reduction for good behavior.
The 30-year-old has been held since December 14 and was originally to be jailed for three years. His sentence was later reduced to one year because he had no criminal history; by the time he walks free on September 14, he will have served nine months.
According to Defense attorney Karim al-Shujairi:
We have been informed officially about the court decision. His release will be a victory for the free and honorable Iraqi media.
