A 68-year-old man who had been sold by his daughter was recovered by authorities after three years of slavery during which he was kept in a stable.

Authorities were alerted to his plight when his daughter made an application to gain custody of him so that she could sell his car. The man, who had an unspecified intellectual disorder was found covered in lice.

Authorities explained the conditions under which the man was held:

He wasn’t really a prisoner. He’d leave for work in the fields every day and wait for his master to come and fetch him home in the evening. The man was fed only once a day and worked for the family for no pay.

If he hadn’t done enough work, he was beaten. He didn’t have anywhere else to go.

Charges have not been laid against the family in question or the daughter as authorities are unclear on which legislation the case would fall under.

In addition to the case in question, police are investigating other possible cases within the same village, with the regional parliamentary deputy, Mihaly Babak going so far as to estimate that there might be an additional 100 to 150 people living as slaves in the same area of southern Hungary.
