As Edwin Ortiz stood preparing to say “I do” among 17 other couples in the southern town of Mira Flores, Peru, something unexpected happened. Two female relatives of his ex-partner (possibly his wife) attacked him.
According to the AP, the two women, who were described as “burly,” pounded his head, screamed at him and managed to push him out into the parking lot where his ex joined in on the action.
Miraflores spokesman Julio Hincho announced on Wednesday that participants in the attack included Ortiz’s ex-partner, mother, sisters and aunts and that “everyone was hauled off to jail”.
According to Ortiz, the woman is his ex-girlfriend, he acknowledged that he had lived with her but said that they had separated and that he was moving on with his life. The family of his ex-partner had a different story, they said that she is his wife. His ex-partner has since filed a suit against him for attempted “crimes against the family.”
When registering for the mass wedding, Ortiz listed himself as a bachelor with no children.
Police officials said that a woman who identified herself as Ortiz’s wife filed a complaint against him for attempted “crimes against the family.” Ortiz and the new woman in his life were not among the couples that were wed when the ceremony continued.
