Dead “Stowaway” Found In Delta Plane’s Wheel Well

Submitted by C. S. Magor on Monday, 8 February 2010One Comment | Google Buzz |

The body of an apparent stowaway was found in the wheel well of a Delta Airlines plane after it completed a trip from New York to Tokyo.

The man seemed ill-prepared for the lack of oxygen and extreme cold that come with a high-altitude cruise – he was wearing only a long-sleeved plaid shirt and jeans. A mechanic who was performing maintenance on the Boeing 777-200 made the gruesome discovery.

Police official Zenjiro Watanabe explained that at this stage, few details are known:

All we know is that he must have sneaked in just before departure, because it is impossible for him to enter the storage during flight.

The Associated Press reports that Watanabe suggested that the man, who had no apparent injuries aside from frostbite, might have died of hypothermia.

Police are investigating to determine whether the man met with foul play; however, given his lack of appropriate attire it would seem fairly safe to assume that he was only a victim of his own stupidity and the -50C temperatures that he would have experienced for much of the 12 hour and 20 minute flight.

Attempts are now being made to identify the man.
