Around 8,000 sailors from all over the world were in Canada for the International Fleet Review. Local police reported that most were well behaved apart from one sailor they described as a ‘drunken French mariner’. Being drunk was bad enough, but the fact that he had removed all of his clothes in a hotel lobby was of greater concern.
Shore patrol and military police helped the man get his clothes back on and took him to the base.
Victoria Police reported that
As a testament to the beautiful weather we enjoyed over the weekend of this International Fleet Review the sailor promptly removed all of his clothes again while in the queue to return to his ship. Unfortunately owing to his level of intoxication and enjoyment of the weather he failed to notice that the person in line behind him was the captain of his ship
Whether he was disciplined by the Captain is unclear, and what he remembers of the visit is not known, but I’m sure the locals remember him very well.
