A security specialist for an Australian television network was allegedly Tased by a security guard working for a rival network as the two groups attempted to cover a fan procession at the World Cup.
The disagreement between the two groups escalated when a Channel 7 reporter tried to defuse the situation, prompting a South African security guard working for Channel 7 to Tase a British security specialist working for Channel 9.
“Russ” a former British military officer, who has protected the likes of Kofi Annan, suffered burns from the Tasing, though it was noted that the less-lethal weapon failed to fell the former soldier.
Nine’s national news director Mark Calvert gave his thoughts:
When I hired security for the World Cup, we had been warned about the country’s crime rate and possible terrorist threats. Who would have thought we’d need protection from a Channel 7 crew?
Channel 7’s Mike Amor, the reporter who had tried to bring calm to the situation before it got out of hand explained that after the situation calmed down, tempers were salved in typical Australian fashion:
Our guard pulled out his Taser gun, but we don’t believe the other guy was actually Tasered. It calmed down and we actually had a beer at the bar with them [Nine] after the game.
It was a silly thing and it’s been sorted.

Ch9 & Ch7 are always at each others throats here in Oz. Nothing unusual I guess. Each reports on the others failures at every opportunity. Bit much when those reportingthe news start making the news….
