And thankfully it has nothing to do with the local Chinese restaurant.
The dead cats, all 100 of them, were being kept in a freezer that didn’t work, one that was owned by Gabriella Bernabei and Robert Grassi, according to the Jackson county Sheriff’s department. Bernabei, however, has a perfectly good explanation for the dead cats in her freezer.
She claims that she was keeping the deceased felines in the freezer until she had the time to give them a proper burial, in keeping with her Wiccan religion, which believes you honor dead animals by returning them to Mother Earth.
One cat, sure, I can see that. But 100 of them. I wonder what other Wiccans would think about that.
Of course Bernabei is playing the religion card, saying that she’s been unfairly targeted for being a Wiccan. The sheriff says no, it’s the 100 dead cats in an non-working freezer, the other 17 mistreated cats, and the deplorable living conditions (an unkempt house and fecal matter everywhere) are the reason Bernabei and her boyfriend are in trouble. Case in point–social services had removed the couple’s three children a couple of weeks ago due to the horrific living conditions.
Just be glad they didn’t run a funeral home.
