A family fishing trip went unexpectedly badly for 14-year-old Kora Wira when a 42-inch barracuda jumped into their boat and bit her on the arm. Dad promptly dispatched the fish with a filleting knife, staunched the flow of blood on his daughter’s arm with a Red Sox shirt and kept the camera clicking.
Before going to hospital, where the wound was closed with 51 stitches (which have since been removed), the pair posed for a catch of the day photo. Kora noted that she was not in pain at the time of the photograph.
Some people might think that it was mean or careless to stop for photographs, I disagree. It was a nasty injury, but it is one of those defining moments that makes for the sort of story that people tend to doubt when there is no photographic evidence. Think about it, a fish with razor sharp teeth jumped into her dad’s boat and bit her on the arm, that sort of thing doesn’t exactly happen every day.
Photo gallery on the next page. Be warned, there are a couple of wound shots and a picture of a dead fish that might be offensive to some viewers.
