Paul the “psychic” octopus who successfully predicted the outcomes of all of Germany’s may be bound for the hotplate if German sports fans have their way.
It was the accuracy of the cephalopod’s predictions that has people calling for him to be cooked in public. When he shuffled over to feed from the pot marked with the Spanish flag some superstitious observers conceded defeat. Then Germany lost and people got hungry for octopus.
Dolores Lusch, who works in a Berlin fish stall, made her thoughts on the matter known:
Nothing beats grilled octopus. Cut him up in thin slices and grill him on all sides with a dash of lemon juice, olive oil and garlic on it. Delicious!
Many in the German media are said to have been repeating similar sentiments – with questioning whether the accuracy of Paul’s tips had begun to affect the mindset of more superstitious members of the German squad.
Paul’s tipping streak included all of Germany’s wins over Argentina, England, Ghana and Australia and a group stage defeat to Serbia. Despite Germany’s bitter loss to Spain, Paul’s future seems secure; he will remain a resident of the Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen.
Incidentally, I prefer my octopus raw, with a dash of soy sauce and a little wasabi – heavenly.
