Delivery Room Brawl Leaves Mother and Baby in Critical Condition

As if that didn’t sound horrifying enough, know this–the brawl was between the two doctors responsible for the mother-to-be and her unborn child.

The site of this terrible story is the Polyclinic Hospital in Messina, on the Italian island of Sicily, where Laura Salpietro and her husband, Matteo Molonia, had been rushed off to after Laura’s water broke.  Once there, the couple’s nightmare began.

As Laura lay in agony, gynaecologist Vincenzo Benedetto and maternity unit doctor Antonio De Vivo began arguing over which delivery method, natural or caesarean, was best suited for the patient.  The argument got heated, and much to Matteo’s disbelief, a full-blown brawl erupted right there in the delivery room.

The doctor’s ridiculous argument led to an hour delay in Laura’s caesarean section, and immediately after the procedure, complications arose.  First off Laura suffered a massive blood loss that led to her requiring an emergency hysterectomy.  Secondly, and worst of all, her newborn baby Antonio suffered two cardiac arrests, and doctors cannot rule out whether or not the neonate suffered any brain damage.

The obviously distraught Matteo had this to say about the incident…

“I risk losing my family because the medical team decided to start arguing in the delivery room. It’s incredible.”

“Now my wife and baby are fighting for their lives and it’s because of these two doctors. I don’t understand why she had to have the hysterectomy.”

“Because of that we can’t have any more children.”

The doctors have been suspended while officials begin investigating what led to this totally preventable tragedy.  Criminal charges could be pending.
