For Ron Sveden, finding out from doctors that the mass in your lung is not cancer, but actually a sprouting pea, is definitely good news. Weird, but good.
Sveden, who suffers from emphysema, had been feeling unwell as of late, with a continuous cough to go along with his underlying lung problem, as well as a newfound loss of appetite and constant fatigue. When he could take it no more, Sveden made the trip to the hospital.
X-rays spotted a small, dark spot on one of his lungs, but a biopsy of the mass came back negative for cancer. Sveden’s doctor’s curiosity got the better of him, so he performed a bronchoscopy on the 75-year-old man, to get a better idea of what was growing in Sveden’s lung.
Sure enough, to the doctor anyway, the mass looked like a pea.
“It was pretty grungy, but it looked like a pea,” Dr. Jeff Spillane said. “I sent it to the pathologist. They said it was a vegetable.”
Eventually doctors cleared away the sprout, drained some fluid that had built up around the pea, and now Sveden, after a 3-week stint in hospital, followed by a week of rehab, is back to normal.
And we always thought veggies were good for you–well, I guess they still are, so long as they don’t end up growing in a lung.
