Swedish medical students get shock when they perform their first autopsy

The students at one of Sweden’s top medical schools got the shock of their lives when they went to perform the first autopsy of their med school careers.  As if cutting open a cadaver and mucking around with the insides isn’t disturbing enough, imagine when it turns out the deceased is/was one of your teachers.

Yes, that is exactly what happened to this group of stunned students.

Obviously the students were a bit shaken over the whole thing, but managed to trudge their way through the procedure.

In the understatement of the year, Chief physician Birgitta Sundelin called the event “extremely unfortunate.”

It also turned into a case of he said/she said, because the student’s are claiming that they didn’t find out the identity of their cadaver until they checked the body’s toe tag, even though Dr. Sundelin claims that the students were informed of the body’s true identity before the autopsy began.

At this point it doesn’t really matter, does it?  The students got some excellent experience dissecting a dead body, and one of their former teachers, even in death, continued to educate his former students.

Sounds like a win/win situation to me.
