Non-violent offenders in Bay Minette, Alabama have a choice: serve their sentence in jail and pay a fine or go to church for a year.
It’s called Operation Restore Our Community or “ROC” and it’s mission is to cut the costs of having non-offenders in the prison system. Right now it costs roughly $75 per day per inmate, according to Bay Minette Police Chief Mike Rowland.
They also hope sentencing the criminal to church every Sunday for a year will teach them proper values, diverting them from the path of evil to the path of good.
There are 56 churches participating, allowing those who opt for the ROC program a variety of choice.
Police Chief Rowland says the program is about making offenders change for good. According to him 30 day drug or alcohol treatment programs don’t work but long-term treatment does.
You never know, it could work. I myself am all for prison work camps.
Not everyone is on board with the idea… check out the commentary video below.
