Undesirable? Really?
With the 70 liters of semen sitting on ice in the Cryos sperm bank and a massive queue of lining up to make donations, director Ole Schou can afford to be picky. He told the Ekstra Bladet newspaper that the bank would be more selective in choosing who could donate and that they would no longer be accepting deposits from redheads; so the deposits of the 600 or so redheaded men waiting in line are surplus to requirements.
He explained:
There are too many redheads in relation to demand. There are too many redheads in relation to demand. I do not think you chose a redhead, unless the partner – for example, the sterile male – has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads. And that’s perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case.
Demand for redheads is still strong in Ireland, the rest of the world – apparently – wants small children with brown hair and brown eyes.
While it is understandable that people who cannot otherwise conceive would want to choose a donor that looks like the father, they would probably be better thinking about these things logically. Red hair only occurs in people who have two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16: both parents need to carry the gene and it is rare, which is why redheads only account for 1-2% of the human population. Keep the genes alive, people – because it would really suck if everyone looked the same.
