Judge reduces man’s jail sentence because he loses weight

George McCovery lost 25 pounds for his early release from jail

Famous for her unique form of sentencing, Judge Miller’s proceedings are shown on the TV show “Lake Courts” and she’s handed down sentences that included going jogging, taking dance classes, getting a math tutor, writing a Christmas card, and losing weight… which is what George McCovery got.

The 37-year old, 345-pound man was arrested for driving with a suspended license. Judge Miller gave him a “lose a pound, gain a day” deal where he would be given a day off his jail time for every pound he lost. Telling him she would check in after 20 days, Judge Miller was surprised to see that he had lost 25 pounds in that time.

“It’s not easy to lose weight,” Judge Miller told the media. “I thought he’d lose 5, maybe, 6 pounds — not 25.”

McCovery says he was inspired by Judge Miller’s faith in him. “She gave me a chance to prove myself, and I didn’t want to let her down,” he explained.

While her unique brand of sentencing is well known, Judge Miller also says she knows there are some people who need to go to jail and for them there’s no challenge in getting out of jail free.
