German police waste $33 million on useless cars

The police force in Hesse, Germany, has bought a fleet of 800 cars that cannot be used for municipal service.

The cars – Opel’s Insignia Sports Tourer – are small and efficient, but are unsuitable for a variety of police uses. The police found that while wearing their utility belts, complete with sidearms and billy clubs, they could not fit into the seats of the car.

Worse still is the fact that the rear windows have poor visibility, meaning that high speed chases become an extremely dangerous proposition.

One quarter of the cars has been delivered so far but it is unlikely that the police will take possession of the whole fleet.
