Chinese soccer ‘Uber-fan’ dies of exhaustion after watching 11 straight nights of soccer

I'd have rather stayed up watching the girls of Euro 2012 no?

Jiang Xiaoshan, 26, of Changsha reportedly stayed up for 11 consecutive nights to watch the Euro 2012 matches on the television, but last Monday June 18th (Tuesday the 19th in China), after watching Italy beat the Republic of Ireland he took a shower, went to bed and died.

This isn’t the first time obsessive fans had health problems related to their favorite sport, both in 2006 and 2010 several people had to be admitted to hospitals worldwide for exhaustion, mostly in Asia. Because of the time difference between China and Europe, the games in the Euro championship are played in the middle of the night in China.

Sources say that exhaustion, but also alcohol and tobacco played a role in Jiang Xiaoshan’s death. He wasn’t a particularly huge fan of Ireland so the fact that they were defeated by Italy had little to do with his death.
