Fisherman Lands a Missile

boatSeems like fishing in the Gulf of Mexico just got dangerous–very dangerous.

Rodney Salomon, a commercial fisherman from Madeira Beach, Florida, returned to port following a fishing expedition in the Gulf of Mexico with one very interesting catch.

A corroded missile that had been fired from an F-15.

Salomon hooked the missile about 50 miles off the coast of Panama City.  He had hoped to keep it as a souvenir, but not knowing if it was still live decided to pack it in ice to keep it cool.

Upon returning to port, officials from Eglin Air Force Base determined that it was a telemetry missile that contained no explosives.  However the MacDill Air Force Base Bomb Squad was called in to dismantle the missile because of the sensitive technology used to transmit data that was found on the projectile.

Salomon, still hoping to keep the missile as a keepsake, asked officials if he could have his prize catch back after it was dismantled.

Not surprisingly, the request was denied. [Yahoo, Image]
