Authorities in the Italian city of Naples have confiscated a crocodile from a man suspected of being a mafia boss.

Police allege that the 40-kilogram, 1.1-meter-long caiman was used by suspect Antonio Cristofaro in order to coerce people into paying for protection. It was kept in a small pool on a terrace at a private home in the southern town of Caserta.

According to a member of the police anti-mafia squad, Maurizio Vallone:

The crocodile was fed live rabbits, a spectacle neighbours could watch from surrounding terraces.

The suspect, believed by police to be a leader of the Camorra syndicate, has been charged with illegal possession of animals.
