Lightning killed woman minutes before proposal

When Richard Butler took his girlfriend Bethany Lott on a hike in the North Carolina mountains, he had a surprise in store. He was planning to propose.

It was raining heavily on Max Patch Bald, as the couple neared the place where the 30-year-old Butler planned on popping the question – then the lightning started.

The last words uttered by Lott, 25, who was an experienced hiker were reportedly:

Look at how beautiful it is.

Lightning struck.

Butler described the sensation:

I was spun 180 degrees and thrown several feet back. My legs turned to Jello, my shoes were smoking and the bottom of my feet felt like they were on fire.

As he came to his senses, he realized that Lott had borne the brunt of the hit. She was lying motionless on the hill and could not be revived. [MSNBC]
