While there are a few off-pump techniques in existence, coronary bypass surgery generally involves the stopping of a patient’s heart. Now, a surgical robot developed by Waseda University in Japan has the potential to eliminate that need. The robot is able to calculate and compensate for the movement of the beating heart and perform the millimeter-accurate maneuvers required in the operation. [Engadget via DVICE]
