Guatemala Bans Motorcycle Passengers To Reduce Violence

passengerDue to unprecedented levels of violence in Guatemala, the government has taken the step of banning motorcycle riders from carrying passengers. The move has been made to try to reduce rising levels of violence that have seen the Guatemala become one of the most violent countries in Central America.

Motorcycles have been the favored form of transportation for hitmen, who shoot their victims from the back of the vehicle, which can then make a quick getaway through traffic. Motorcycle riders must also wear brightly colored jackets with their registration number clearly visible on the back.

At least forty bus drivers have been murdered in Guatemala this year, many from motorbikes, for failing to meet gangs’ extortion demands. [Reuters]
