Suicidal Man Shoved Off Bridge By Onlooker

China
A man contemplating suicide was pushed from a bridge in China by an annoyed passerby on Thursday.

Chen Fuchao was distressed at the prospect of having accumulated 2 million yuan in debt and was debating whether to end his life by jumping from the Haizhu Bridge. He had been there for several hours when 66-year-old Lai Jiansheng broke through a police cordon, offered to shake his hand and pushed him from the ledge where he was sitting.

In Lai’s own words:

I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest,” Lai told Xinhua. “They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities’ attention to their appeals.

Chen fell 8 meters onto a semi-inflated emergency balloon, injuring his elbow and his spine. Lai was granted bail the following day. According to the Beijing Morning Post, Lai suffers from a mental illness and was traveling to pick up his pills at the time of the incident. [Yahoo via Weird Asia News]
