The Swedish Tag agency formally rejected a couple’s request to name their daughter Michael, in honor of the deceased pop king.
The agency, which has the additional responsibility of approving babies’ names, stated that they felt it inappropriate to name a girl with a well-established boys name.
The couple expressed their disappointment to Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra:
It seems ridiculous and we’ve spoken with a friend in the United States who said that Michael is a unisex name.
What does everyone think, is Sweden’s system an infringement on personal freedom, or a good way to prevent naming abuse?
