A burglar who left a fecal surprise for the owner of a New Mexico home might have landed himself back behind bars.

According to the Valencia County sheriff, the thief stole guns that had great sentimental value to the homeowner as they had been passed down through generations of his family. Had the thief just stolen the guns, he might have gotten away, but what he did next might have provided law enforcement officials with enough evidence to make an arrest.

Sheriff Rene Rivera explained that after eating food and drinks from the home, the burglar used the facilities and “left his solid waste on display for the homeowner.”

According to the homeowner, who did not want to be named:

It’s more of an insult right there. It was a big slap in the face.

However, it was that slap in the face that provided a link with the suspected culprit. The state crime lab managed to extract DNA from a fecal sample that was taken at the scene. That DNA matched a record in the state’s DNA database of a man on parole for burglary.

Police have said that they will not release further details regarding the suspect until the DNA evidence has been matched with a fresh sample.
