Security concerns are said to be the reason for Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan wanting to build a wall around Ascot Place, his sprawling property in Windsor, England.
Locals are concerned that the wall will disturb the views that they have enjoyed for years; it just might, the proposed wall will be 6-and-a-half-feet high and the stretch more than four miles to completely encircle the 400-acre grounds. The construction, which has already been approved but which is yet to commence, has been estimated to use enough bricks to build 150 5-bedroom houses, with a cost that has been estimated to be up to GBP £2million.
Residents’ groups are preparing a High Court challenge of the council approval.
Local Historian Ruth Timbrell sums up the general sentiment:
The views that will be lost are our Jerusalem. They are absolutely stunning. They have been unchanged for centuries. The thought of losing them behind a brick wall is appalling.
If this wall goes ahead it will not only have a detrimental effect on historic views, but on wildlife and ancient hedging.
It has been extended to the very edge of the estate, but surely their security would be better served if it was closer to the main house. Windsor Great Park doesn’t have a wall and the Queen goes riding in it.
