Tasered Great Grandmother Accepts $40K Settlement

Kathryn Winkfein, the 72-year-old woman who was tasered in Texas earlier this year has accepted a settlement offer of $40,000 from Travis County.

The Texas woman was stopped by Deputy Constable Christopher Bieze on May 11, 2009 for speeding. Bieze alleged that she was driving 60 mph in a 45 mph construction zone.

When Winkfein refused to sign a citation issued by the officer, an argument developed, during which the officer drew his taser and shot the 4-foot-11 woman. She was charged with resisting arrest.

Winkfein had originally sought $165,000, however, after negotiations, she agreed upon an amount of $40,000. Although Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton made a statement disapproving of Bieze’s actions, an internal investigation revealed that there were no breaches of policy and no action was taken against him.

A charge against Winkfein of resisting arrest has yet to be heard.
