A former member of the U.S. Naval Academy’s water polo team has survived an apparent suicide attempt in which he jumped from the George Washington Bridge.

According to authorities, Adrian Rawn stopped his car on the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, walked to the rail and jumped into the water 200 feet below and survived an impact strong enough to leave his clothes shredded.

Despite being seriously injured by the fall, Rawn is then said to have swum to the New Jersey shore and, climbed out of the water without assistance. He is currently being treated for his injuries at Hackensack University Medical Center.
