Woman Walks Free After Squashing Death of Smaller Boyfriend

A 136kg woman was given a non-custodial sentence after the squashing death of her much smaller boyfriend.

News.com reports that Mia Landingham of Cleveland sat on the 54.4kg Mikal Middleston-Bey, the father of her three children, after an argument in the August of 2009. He died of asphyxiation.

In asking for leniency Landingham’s attorney claimed that she had repeatedly been a victim of domestic violence during the course of the relationship and added that prior to the incident she had no criminal record.

Her attorney told said there was a long history of domestic abuse in the relationship. He asked Judge Carolyn Friedland for leniency and pointed out she has no prior criminal record.

Landingham expressed contrition over the squashing:

I just want to say that I am sincerely sorry about this situation. I wish I could take it back.

Middleton-Bey’s stepmother Sharon Philips expressed her grief:

I just want to let you know how much you have hurt us by taking Mikal away from us.

After pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter Landingham was sentenced to three years probation, 100 hours of community service and immediately released from jail. The maximum sentence for the crime is five years.

One of Middleston-Bey’s sisters expressed the family’s dissatisfaction at the outcome:

So basically you can say that I can go sit on somebody and get probation? I feel there wasn’t no justice.

Maybe the probation should be conditional on losing weight. I mean, they’ve already sentenced some hackers to not being allowed to own/touch computers as part of their punishment. It seems to me that she’s a walking lethal weapon at her current size.

feel sorry for the guys loved ones who now feel a miscarriage of justice but she had no criminal record and said she was a victim of abuse even though she wound up killing he guy by squashing him. proving that love can kill. probation for squashing a lover. guess the judge felt she did not warrant being locked up for she paid the price by her boyfriend going out being crushed by his girl friend. but only probation and community service she still took a life. but guess squishing some one if they are abusive is not worthy of prison time.
