Husky Sheriff Makes Inmates Pedal For Television

Maricopa County, Phoenix, Arizona: A visit by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to the Tent City Jail in which he witnessed large numbers of overweight inmates resulted in the implementation of a program called “Pedal Vision”. Inmates will now have to ride bicycles to power their televisions.

The stationary bicycles are turned into generators that will power up a connected television if an inmate generates 12 volts of electricity – an hour of pedaling equals an hour of television and only inmates who choose to pedal will be allowed to watch.

Arpaio told AZ Central:

I started with the females because they seemed more receptive to the idea. The only exercise the females get right now is speed-walking around the tents yard and few are doing that. This gives them a reason to get moving and a way to burn up to 500 calories an hour. They won’t be charged a monthly gym fee but they will have to sign a contract.

Given the expanse of his own waistline, one cannot help but wonder if Sheriff Arpaio would be better served by implementing his draconian weight-control program a little closer to home.
