Chef Dies In Freak Eel Butt Prank Accident

Share A Chinese man died after an eel ate his bowels – how said eel came to be in the presence of his bowels is where things get more than a little weird.

The 59-year-old, who has not been identified, was drinking with what can be presumed to be the wrong kind of company.

He was presented to a Sichuan hospital with abdominal pain, dehydration and anal bleeding. Doctors found him to be in a severe state of shock, but were clueless as to the cause of his condition. An exploratory laparotomy revealed a 50cm long Asian swamp eel trapped in his rectum.

The eel was already dead but seemingly did not go quietly, having done its best to eat its way out. In its bid for freedom, the swamp eel had bitten through his intestines causing significant internal bleeding – sepsis followed soon after. The chef succumbed to his injuries after 10 days in intensive care.

So how did it get there? His “friends” seem to have thought that an eel up the butt made for an amusing prank. I’m guessing that the death of their friend and the police investigation that is currently underway is making them wish that they had thought of something else. [SearchChina.jp – in Japanese]

The chef did not die. He went through surgery and he was still there 10 days after (as of May 3, 2010). In fact, the Chinese article I read said that 10 days after the surgery, he has gotten past the stage of bacterial infection and breathing requiring assistance. He was taken off the oxygen tank, not because he died but because he’s starting to recover. They just had to reroute his digestive tract and locate the anus/rectum at the belly.
