Colin Belle, a friendly man of West Indian origin, has claimed in a complaint to authorities in Darwin that bouncers at various clubs victimized him because he talks to too many women.
Security employed at a venue called Shennanigans Irish Bar in Darwin’s CBD claimed he was a trouble maker and had a history of sexual misconduct.
Belle believes it is more sinister than that. He believes that it is because he is black and because of his success with women. He told the Northern Territory News:
When I go in a bar I guarantee you I stand there – not moving – and 15 women come up to me. I’m a friendly person, of course I’m going to talk to them
After initially being ejected from the bar, Belle returned to “debate his eviction.” It was then that things became ugly. Hocking claimed that Belle posed a threat to safety – footage of the incident, which apparently showed Belle being placed in a choke-hold and thrown to the ground, did not support his version of events.
Commission chairman Richard O’Sullivan commented:
On viewing the footage a reason for the physical altercation cannot be seen
Mr Belle has claimed that he has been refused entry from other bars in Darwin, who coincidentally, employed the same bouncer.
While the commission upheld Belle’s version of events, it also recognized that he was “argumentative and at times somewhat annoying nature” and did not suspend Hocking’s security license.
