Meter Maids give Microsoft a welcome they’ll not forget

Gold Coast Mayor with the Iconic Maids

Microsoft got more, or should that be less, than they bargained for during Microsoft’s huge Tech-Ed conference held recently on the Gold Coast.

The coast’s iconic Meter Maids were hired by Microsoft to take part in the conference’s welcoming reception at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

It seems someone didn’t do enough homework before enlisting their services. No one realized that the gold bikini-clad women would be so scantily dressed, forcing them to apologize to delegates, some of whom voiced their displeasure on social networking site, Twitter.

Nick Hodge, a Microsoft Australia employee said:

Skimpy meter maids at opening night: yes. Am I personally happy about it: no

Catherine Eibner, described as a ‘developer evangelist’ with the software giant, who hosted the conference’s Women in IT lunch said:

I didn’t see them myself but think it was a badly done attempt at providing local gold coast context.

Tracy Fellows, Microsoft Australia’s managing director, said on Twitter that she felt the promotional stunt was:

not acceptable PERIOD! and no one will be confused that this is JUST WRONG!

For the australian managing director of microsoft not to know what a meter maid wears, is a sad indication of how little she knows about her own country. She needs to get out a bit more I think. Fact is, when the girls walk down the street here, plenty of tourist want their photographs, and they are iconic on the coast. Plenty of corporate companies enlist their services, and I think its a bit precious for microsoft to take this approach.Perhaps they are working in cyberworld too much and need a reality check?

Give me a break! The GCMM girls were classy and well presented. Those showing displeasure from MS are just covering their own arse. The only ones really objecting to the GCMM girls are the few out of shape, overweight women.
