I'm pretty sure the pirate who thought this was a good idea got fired.

After managing to attach a rope to a cruise liner’s lower deck and begin climbing up to commandeer the ship, a Somali pirate was repelled by neither guns nor high-pressure water hoses.  Instead, his brilliant scheme was foiled by a deck chair to the dome.

Late at night in April 2009 on the MSC Melody, a 500-plus cabin cruise ship, guests were socializing when they noticed the small boat following behind.  Soon, it reached the rear of the liner and threw a rope to one of the lower decks.  As one Somali pirate began climbing the rope, guests threw anything they could find off the edge to thwart the pirate; inevitably, a German passenger hurled an entire deck chair, knocking the would-be pirate into the sea.  And that’s when things got ugly.

The pirates responded by opening fire on the deck, hitting one man twice.  MSC Cruises settled with the British man and his wife out of court, but they recently came forward to describe the attack and subsequent defense of the liner, accusing the Melody’s crew of being unprepared and incompetent, though MSC Cruises claim that the crew was in control and aware of the situation.  [Source]
