It looked like the ideal kid’s party, with a water slide, picnic table and children. What police found inside was anything but.
Responding to an anonymous tip police raided the property in Dayton, Texas, which was about 65km (40m) outside of Houston. At first the children’s party disguise had them doubting the call. That was until they started seeing suspects running from a small barn, fleeing to their cars, running into the woods and one driving through the fence.
Knowing they were on to something officers entered the barn while the children next to the water slide cried and screamed.
Inside the barn they found evidence of a cockfighting ring. Scales, tags, entry slips were just the tip of the iceberg.
Outside, just feet away from the frightened children they found the dump site – birds bloody and half alive. The lucky few were already dead.
Live fowl, many valued at more than $1000, were found pinned in cages around the whole property. Many even had the lethal metal blades still in their beaks.
The birds were removed along with a horse and two dogs also in poor condition. Jose Lara and Irasema Ramirez have been arrested at the scene for failing to identify and interfering with the law.
