Imagine the surprise of Detroit power company workers when they arrived to see what the cause of a power outage was and found a young deer on the power lines 20 feet above ground.
It’s the case of the flying fawn.
While the deer population in Michigan is becoming a problem, it is still highly unlikely they’ve learned to fly. Most likely the high up deer was a case of divine intervention thwarting the hunting of a family of bald headed eagles.
Bald headed eagles, who’s wing span can reach 8 feet, are known to fly high with their prey then drop them to their deaths to feast on later. The young fawn would be no match for the vicious bird hunters.
Just in this case, the deer’s life was saved when he landed on the power lines.
Power was quickly restored and the fawn was safely brought back to earth. And everyone’s happy… except the hungry flock of eagles.
One thing to note, although the idea of deer on power lines causing power shortages sounds like a rarity, it’s not really. There are stories of this happening through out the US and Canada. Maybe it’s a new killing technique for the eagles – death by electricity. Perhaps they’ve gotten a taste for cooked deer meat. [Examiner | Image]
