Man payed $400,000 for a croissant he never got

A Taiwanese man paid $400,000 for a croissant and he never got it. That’s the sad story of the phone scam that went way wrong and the unfortunate soul who didn’t have the common sense to stop it before it got out of hand.

Chui, saw the picture of a beautiful, mouth watering French croissant in an ad which referred to the bread as “so delicious it will make you cry.” Thus, Chui decided to order this eye watering bread and sent 99 Taiwan bills (about $3.50), which unfortunately never came.

At this point many of us will question why someone would even think of ordering bread through the mail since it would ineveitably be stale by the time it arrived but that is for another story…. and this one is in Taiwan where sometimes things don’t always make the most sense.

Apparently, the company called him to say the transaction didn’t go through so he sent the money again. Another $3.50 – totally now $7.

This is where the story gets a little wonky. Chui then received a call from someone claiming to be from the “Monetary Supervision Commission” accusing him of money laundering.

Chui must have been told to send more money to the money laundering “police” because all in all he paid out 12 million Taiwan dollars which is equal to about $400,000. Police haven’t found the culprits and of course Chui never got his bread.

I guess there is something to be said about quitting while you’re ahead.

The moral of the story: bread can never make you cry… but scam artists can.
